Last year, I decided it was time for a pivot in my career choices. I’ve always felt like I needed to find ‘meaningful work’. I would fill my free time with side hustles — jumping from one thing to the next — seeking fulfilment. I thought, “I could work anywhere, and find meaning outside of work hours.” Eventually, it got to a point where I’d have feelings of frustration and exasperation for something… more. When I’d share these feelings, a lot of people didn’t understand and didn’t know what to say. It doesn’t mean I was ungrateful for having a job — I just felt like I didn’t fit in. And that feeling has never gone away until now.
It’s taken me so many years (and I mean 10 years at least) to make a decision, stick to it and find fulfilment. And no, not every person has that pull within to find meaning in a job. A job is exactly what it is sometimes — a way to live and do things you actually enjoy. Sometimes there’s no purpose than for it to provide food, shelter and comfort.
Now that I’ve finished my study and have been working in the industry, there are a few lessons I’ve learned:
